While much of our working environment is determined by others, individually we can take steps that will help to protect and enhance our mental health and wellbeing.

Limit working extra hours

Try to limit the amount of overtime you do. If it’s becoming more normal to be working extra hours, discuss your duties with your manager.

Schedule meetings in core work hours

Scheduling meetings to begin and end only within core working hours will help you protect your ‘out-of-hours’ times and plan accordingly.

Take regular breaks

Taking a break once an hour can help increase productivity. Leave the workplace and exercise during lunch to stay refreshed for the rest of the afternoon.

Set realistic deadlines and stick to them

Managing your schedule so that you deliver work on time helps you complete your tasks to a high standard and without pressure.

Take holiday leave

Having a complete break from work has mental and physical health benefits like reducing work-related stress, preventing anxiety and depression, and increasing work performance.

Keep a healthy work-life balance

By ensuring that work doesn’t interfere with our personal life, we can pay full attention to our loved ones and get the downtime we need for a healthy work-life balance. If you must take work home, agree on a set time to do it – the earlier the better.

It’s ok to say “No” sometimes

When demands exceed our capacity to deliver, it’s ok to set work limits. Don’t be afraid to say no and explain your reasons. It doesn’t mean you are letting your team down. When your response is transparent and genuine, you can discuss workarounds, reconsider priorities or involve someone else to help. It’ll allow you to avoid overloading yourself with work so that you’ll be in a better position to say yes next time.

Switch off from technology

Everyone needs a break from work to unwind and de-stress. Set up an out-of-office email as soon as you leave work. This will stop colleagues and clients expecting you to respond. When you’re on holiday, put everything that’s to do with work out of sight and switch your work phone off.

Drawing clear lines between your work and personal life will help you to get the physical and mental rest you need, before returning to work with a fresh mindset.
